Savings goal calculator

Set a goal, a date and how often you get paid. See exactly how much to put aside each time, and what all your goals add up to each month.

Add up to 5 goals, like separate sinking funds. Each one gets its own amount per deposit, and the total below shows what all of them need each month.

Deposits are counted as full weeks, 2-week periods, half months or months between today and your date. With interest, it compounds monthly, deposits land at the end of each period, and the rate stays the same. For planning only, not financial advice.

How it works

Break a big number into small deposits

Matching your deposits to your paydays makes the plan easier to keep. The math is the same; only the size of each deposit changes.

  • Example: $1,200 in 12 months is $100 a month, or about $23 a week.
  • Already saved: it comes off the top before we split what's left.
  • Several goals: the monthly total tells you if they fit your budget together.

If the total per month is more than you can spare, move a date later or lower a goal and watch the number drop.

Next step

Track every deposit, not just the plan

Planly Savings Jars keeps up to 15 funds in one Google Sheet. Set a goal and a monthly goal for each, log deposits by date, and watch saved, left and percent complete update for every fund. Want it inside a full budget? Planly Money Map adds sinking funds to 12 monthly budgets and a yearly dashboard. Both stay private in your own Google Drive.

FAQ

Good to know

How much do I need to save each month to reach my goal?

Take what's left to save (goal minus what you already have) and divide it by the number of deposits before your date. If you save weekly or every 2 weeks, the per-month figure is the deposit times the number of deposits in a year, divided by 12.

How do you count the number of deposits?

We count the full saving periods between today and your target date: whole weeks for weekly, whole 2-week stretches for every 2 weeks, and calendar months (or half months) for monthly and twice a month. If your date is less than one period away, it counts as one deposit.

How does the interest rate change the result?

Leave it at 0% for a regular account. If you add a yearly rate, interest compounds monthly on what you've saved and on each deposit, which lowers how much you need to put in. We assume each deposit lands at the end of its period and the rate stays the same, so treat it as an estimate.

Can I plan more than one goal at a time?

Yes, up to 5. This works like sinking funds: a separate pot for each thing you're saving for, such as a car repair, a trip or holiday gifts. The Total per month at the top adds up what every active goal needs.

What do the colors mean?

The green progress bar shows how much of each goal you've saved already, and it turns dark green at 100%. A green note means the goal is reached, or that interest alone will get you there. A pink note means something needs a fix: the date is today or past, there's no date, or there's no goal amount.

Is my information saved anywhere?

Only in your own browser on this device, so your goals are there when you come back. Nothing is sent to us. Reset brings back the example goals.
